Founded by Kwang Jo Choi, 9th Degree Grand Master, Choi Kwang-Do is the culmination of more than 50 years of martial arts experience and is recognized as one of the fastest growing martial arts.Choi Kwang Do is a unique martial art that seeks to improve the health, productivity, and quality of life of its members. Choi Kwang Do is a martial art based on scientific truth, rather than mysticism. Choi Kwang Do’s aim is to continually evolve as a martial art and exercise program with a continued commitment to incorporate science for the benefit of the practitioner, and mankind. Choi Kwang Do classes are taught in a friendly, family-orientated atmosphere, and in a fun and easy to learn manner. The development of character and mental strength based on CKD’s principles is considered the most important overall goal in CKD training along with the attainment of proper techniques.
The Choi Kwang-Do system is designed for prevention and healing of adult disease also known as modern disease or poor lifestyle disease. These degenerative diseases include diabetes, heart and circulatory problems, arthritis, osteoporosis, and obesity. The Choi Kwang-Do system of training, coupled with a healthy diet, helps solve the root causes of these medical conditions and helps the body quickly heal itself as it adapts to a newer healthier state through proper exercise – one of the most important element for preventative health. Balanced integrated movements involving equal amounts of left and right side training helps prevent deterioration of brain cells, allows for cognitive thinking, and provides memory improvements. In addition, learning how to properly adjust frequency, duration, and intensity of exercise helps to stimulate the circulatory system, increases blood flow and cardiovascular health, develops fast twitch muscle fiber, quickens reaction times, and improves muscle toning.
Most professionals agree that stress contributes to aging and health problems. Through Choi Kwang-Do training, we teach students to reduce the effects of stress by improving nervous system development and function. Proper breathing methods- during stretching, training, and at rest - further promotes a stress free lifestyle. Through proper sustained aerobic exercise, the body releases natural chemicals that stimulate the brain and provide a feel good effect - further contributing to the reduction of stress. Choi Kwang-Do stretches help to lengthen muscles, increase circulation and blood flow, stimulate neural receptors, and relax both the mind and body. At the end of every class, students leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated in the knowledge that they are exercising properly - they are exercising for optimum health!
Choi Kwang-Do utilizes practical movements and target training to develop techniques that work. Choi Kwang-Do techniques are designed to utilize the entire body - maximizing power to the target. Techniques employ scientific principles such as plyometric stretch, sequential motion, plantar flex, and full range of motion - both in the limbs and joints - to deliver this impact. Speed is further refined during class drills to improve fast twist muscle type fiber development and reaction time. All of this works to enhance inner confidence and peace of mind in the knowledge that you can protect yourself!
Because of the powerful nature of the art, students are taught that the first goal is to avoid a potentially dangerous situation. This includes understanding different levels of awareness and training intuition - paying attention to how you are feeling in a particular area or about someone nearby. This is all geared towards improving your confidence about your surroundings and recognizing when something doesn't feel right so appropriate actions can be taken.
Unfortunately, many martial arts today still practice tournament or sparring which is not conducive to learning effective self-defense skills. On the contrary, Choi Kwang-Do maximizes the student's ability to defend his/her self through a series of specialized defense drills. Students learn to deal with oncoming attacks and react with explosive force. Reaction and movement skills are further refined through these street proven defense drills. Furthermore, adult students learn how to deal with close range attacks - opponents grabbing or locking them in hold - and respond with a "never give up" means to recover and counter attack. Through this entire system, the tools needed to survive a real situation are developed. Ultimately, students feel more confident that if an unavoidable situation arose, they have a means to deal with it.
Choi Kwang-Do's training methods and concepts are unique in the fitness industry. When improved health and practical self-defense is coupled with positive mental benefits, the result is strong self-control, sharp mental focus, and unshakable self-confidence! Many of our students find their improved focus and self-discipline carries over into their personal lives which help them reach their fitness, lifestyle, and personal goals. Choi Kwang-Do is a dynamic art - one that continually evolves.
